Oklahoma Sooners land even more bad news regarding their already nightmare of an injury-riddled season in the trenches
The Oklahoma Sooners have gotten bad news regarding offensive lineman Michael Fasusi, who’s shoulder injury could keep him out of the game vs. Georgia.
Just as the Oklahoma Sooners landed some positive recruiting news with a dual-sport athlete joining the 2026 class, another blow hit a program already reeling from a rough start to the season.
Michael Fasusi, arguably the best left tackle in the country and the Sooners’ best offensive lineman, appears unlikely to suit up this weekend against No. 2 Georgia. That shoulder injury, which has limited him all season, now threatens to sideline him for the biggest game on Oklahoma’s schedule.
Per Pete Thamel of ESPN, Oklahoma star sophomore left tackle Michael Fasusi faces long odds to play at No. 2 Georgia this weekend. He’s Oklahoma’s top offensive lineman, and he’s only played limited snaps in the first half of the opener against UTEP. When you go back and watch the All-22 film from the UTEP game, Fasusi played only 17 snaps. In nearly every one, he used one arm.
The other was hanging down because of how bad the shoulder was. You simply cannot do that against Georgia. If he’s not ready, keep him out. This guy is the future of Oklahoma football. He’s only a sophomore, and he’s already one of the best left tackles in the country. There is no reason to risk further damage to that shoulder in a game the Sooners may not be equipped to win regardless.
Oklahoma’s offensive line is battered across the board
Fasusi’s absence only compounds the problems up front. Ryan Fodje has been injured. Jake Maikkula has been injured. True freshmen have stepped in and played decent football, but issues remain everywhere on this offensive line.
The offense hasn’t looked good through two weeks. And Fasusi being out is a huge reason Oklahoma hasn’t been able to trust its protection. The Sooners got beat embarrassingly by Michigan. And it got even worse when they barely beat New Mexico. Constant injuries and inconsistency are affecting the entire team.
Saturday against the Bulldogs carries enormous weight. If Georgia blows Oklahoma out of the water, the Sooners’ season could be over. There would be no realistic path to the College Football Playoff. However, if Oklahoma wins or even keeps it close and makes it a competitive game on the road, you could make the case that the season is still alive, provided they can get things together moving forward.
That’s where Fasusi’s return becomes even more critical later in the year. If the season is still breathing after this weekend, he would need to come back at some point to anchor that offensive line for the stretch run. If the season is effectively done, there would be far less urgency to bring him back and risk aggravating the shoulder. It’s not great news for a program searching for any kind of momentum. Then again, has there been any good news for the Sooners lately? It kind of is what it is.
