The Oklahoma Sooners just landed Colton Fitzgibbon, who plays football and baseball, and he could do both for OU.
The Oklahoma Sooners just landed another player in their 2028 recruiting class, and this one comes with a unique twist. Colton Fitzgibbon is a dual-sport athlete who has committed to play both football and baseball at Oklahoma.
The 2028 wide receiver and center fielder brings elite speed to Norman, owning the fastest 60-yard dash time in the country at 6.26 seconds. Fitzgibbon shared his excitement after making his decision.
“Blessed and honored to become part of the family, Boomer Sooner,” Fitzgibbon said.
What Fitzgibbon brings to Oklahoma
Fitzgibbon is listed at 5’10”, 160 pounds and is rated as a three-star wide receiver in the 2028 recruiting class. Rivals ranks him the 450th-ranked prospect nationally, a top-60 player at his position, and a top-35 player in California. He comes from San Ramon Valley in Danville, California.
The star rating shouldn’t concern anyone. Oklahoma doesn’t necessarily look at stars for this. The Sooners are big on giving guys a shot, no matter their star rating. Look at guys like Courtland Guillory, who was a three-star as a true freshman last year and started every single game for the Sooners. He was elite. Look at guys like Taylor Wein, who used to be a three-star. There’s no reason why Fitzgibbon couldn’t come in and be a key player for this team eventually.
Nobody is expecting him to do that as a true freshman, especially in football. He could do it in baseball; he could do it in football. But the raw athleticism is obvious. This kid can do it all. He’s just an athlete.
The last time something like this happened with the Sooners, the player quit the basketball team to join the baseball team full time. Kids think they can do both, but it ends up being too much, especially if the sports are close on the calendar. Baseball and football don’t really overlap the way football and basketball do, so that concern is smaller here.
If Fitzgibbon doesn’t stick with both sports, that’s completely fine. Nobody will bash him for that. But you love that the Sooners are knocking two birds out with one stone here. Oklahoma needed a center fielder in its baseball class, and it needed a wide receiver in the 2028 recruiting class. Fitzgibbon fills both.
The Sooners now have four commitments in their 2028 football recruiting class: quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, Connor Arant, Jay Schell, and Fitzgibbon. That number jumped quickly. It feels like just a week ago Oklahoma had only one commitment in its 2028 class. Now the Sooners have four, and the momentum could keep this thing rolling. Fitzgibbon seems like a player who could be pretty fun to watch.
