Just last week, it was reported that the Detroit Lions had speedy deep threat Texas receiver Matthew Golden in town for a top-30 visit. That spawned a discussion around town about the possibility that the Lions could move on from Jameson Williams at some point.

To us, the point that made a lot of sense was at the 2025 NFL Draft. The big reason is that the team would do it ahead of the fifth-year option deadline on May 1st. The Lions would have a chance to replace a deep threat with another deep threat.

This one won't be commanding a ton of money in less than a year, and it would allow the Lions to more comfortably sign Aidan Hutchinson, Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta to their expected top-of-the-market deals.

As we enter draft week, there is a growing thought that this could potentially happen among people inside the NFL, according to Sports Illustrated's NFL Insider, Albert Breer.

"Receiver’s another spot to consider—with a fifth-year option decision coming on Jameson Williams, and some in NFL circles believing he could be traded."

It's no longer just something a few crazy reporters in Detroit think could happen. It's something teams around the league are paying attention to.

Obviously, this is not a move that Lions fans want to happen right now, and it's totally easy to understand why. He's an exciting young player who can change the course of a game and open up the offense with his speed. The problem has always been that we don't have any control over the money, and the people who do might feel a little unsafe with the suspensions, the internal affairs case, and the injuries.

We're going to see what happens soon, but it's not something that can easily be ruled out at this point.
