The Tennessee Vols are reportedly one of the "early standouts" for the son of a UT football legend.

According to 247Sports recruiting analyst Collin Kennedy, Tennessee is one of the early standouts for 2027 five-star safety Cooper Witten.

Cooper is the son of former Volunteers tight end Jason Witten.

"He has been taking his time with the recruiting process, but Tennessee, Oklahoma, Baylor, and Notre Dame have been mentioned as some of the early standouts in his recruitment," wrote Kennedy on Monday. "He wants to visit his contenders several times before coming close to a decision."

Kennedy also noted that Witten was "impressive" at the Under Armour Next Football Camp Series in Dallas this past weekend.

Witten, 6-foot-2/210 lbs from Argyle, TX, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 1 safety in the nation and the No. 4 player in the state of Texas. He's also rated as the No. 22 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.

It's still very early in Witten's recruitment, and there's certainly no guarantee that he'll end up at Tennessee (remember, he's grown up in Texas), but it's definitely a good sign for Vols fans that UT's coaching staff appears to be building a solid relationship with the talented young defensive back.

Beyond the fact that Witten is the son of a Vols legend, he's also one of the best defensive players in the 2027 recruiting class. Landing Witten would be a huge get for Tennessee, but this is a recruiting battle that won't be settled anytime soon.
