No running back, ever, was as productive in a season as Saquon Barkley was for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. Even though there were a lot of factors for the Eagles' championship, Barkley's relevance for the ring is undeniable.
With 57 rushing yards in a big 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans, Saquon surpassed Terrell Davis in 1998 for the most rushing yards in a season combining the regular season and playoffs. Davis had 2,476 yards, and Barkley reached 2,504 in the Super Bowl LIX—the first player ever to surpass 2,500 rushing yards in a regular season/postseason combo.
"It's very obvious when you watch the tape how good of a player he is. But the things that he has that he brings to our football team as far as his leadership, his work ethic. He's an awesome teammate. Those are the things that make him very special," head coach Nick Sirianni said after Barkley won the OPOY award. "And that's pretty special that I'm saying that even more after you see him jumping over guys backwards and all that stuff."
Numbers
Saquon Barkley had the eighth most prolific regular season for a running back ever, with 2,005 rushing yards. He joined Eric Dickerson, Adrian Peterson, Jamal Lewis, Barry Sanders, Derrick Henry, Terrell Davis, Chris Johnson, and OJ Simpson on the 2,000-yard club.
In the playoffs, Barkley had 119 rushing yards against the Green Bay Packers, 205 against the Los Angeles Rams, 118 against the Washington Commanders, and XX in the Super Bowl versus the Chiefs.
Even better for Eagles fans, beyond the championship, is that the offensive player of the year's history in Philly is just getting started. The running back signed a three-year deal with the Eagles last offseason, so he's under contract through 2026.
