Jets' 2025 free agent signing might be one of the biggest losers for the team following the NFL Draft

The New York Jets finished the 2025 NFL draft with seven selections made over the course of the three days.  The Jets moved up a few times in the draft, but in the end, they kept true to the seven selections they had.  Each one of those selections had ramifications for other players on the team.

Whether a player was selected to replace another player, or not selecting someone to replace a player, jobs and roles were more clearly defined after the draft.

With that in mind, here are the biggest winners and losers for the New York Jets after the NFL Draft

Winners

Breece Hall, Braelon Allen & Isaiah Davis

The Jets took Armand Membou with the seventh overall pick and Mason Taylor in the second round as the third tight end off the ball. It is a very clear statement that the New York Jets offense is going to consist of running the ball, followed by running the ball, and for good measure, they are going to run the ball again. There will be plenty of work to go around for all three running backs as I imagine the Jets will go from one of the lowest ranked teams in rushing attempts in 2024, to top five in 2025.

Justin Fields

As far as quarterbacks looking to run and make safe passes go, Fields hit the jackpot. With Membou now slated to play the right tackle, the Jets by any measure should have a top five offensive line for years. Fields should have all day to throw the ball, and plenty of running lanes to scramble and take off when the situation arrises. The Jets also grabbed him a pair of steady hands in the passing game in Mason Taylor. Taylor won’t do much for Fields in terms of yardage, but he will be a nice security valve in short distances.

2026 Mock Draft enthusiasts

Yes, we are only days removed from the 2025 NFL draft, but the New York Jets ignored one position in this draft that the 2026 NFL draft is going to be filled with: quarterbacks. The Jets gave Justin Fields a short-term contract to be a bridge quarterback to the next Jets’ bite of the quarterback apple. By not selecting a quarterback in the 2025 draft, even a late-round developmental project, the Jets made a loud and clear statement, the quarterback of the future is in next year’s draft. So, any mock draft enthusiasts can start penciling in any number of quarterbacks for the New York Jets in 2026.

Losers

Garrett Wilson

There is being a team’s number one target and then there is being a team’s only target. Unfortunately, Garrett Wilson is going to find himself in the latter category this year. The New York Jets did very little to give Fields targets to throw the football to this offseason. Even the players they did sign are little more than rotational players on almost any other team. Opposing defenses are going to double cover Wilson on almost every play and dare Justin Fields and any other pass catcher to beat them.

Quinnen Williams

Speaking of having to deal with two players at once, the Jets did Q no favors in the middle of the Jets defense. I expect Quinnen to see double and triple-teams on almost every play until the Jets find someone to play alongside him on the interior of the defensive line who can win one-on-one matchups. The Jets did not draft any players along their defensive interior and only signed rotational guys Byron Coward and Derrick Nnandi in free agency.

Brandon Stephens

I have been adamant that Brandon Stephens might be one of the worst free agent signings in Jets’ history in a history that is filled with terrible signings. But Stephens may not have the number two corner spot opposite Sauce Gardner locked up as he originally thought. The Jets grabbed Florida State cornerback Azareye’h Thomas in hopes that Aaron Glenn could turn him into a starter. With the lack of real competition, Thomas might get his shot early regulating Stephens to the bench where he belongs.
