Jordan Travis, the developmental quarterback the New York Jets drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, number 171 overall out of Florida State has informed the team that he is retiring from football. Travis sustained a serious injury to his left leg in his final college game against North Alabama on Nov. 18, 2023.

"On November 18, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn," said Travis, who will be placed on the reserve/retired list, in a statement. "I gave everything I had to the rehab process but despite all my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with the doctors, medical experts and my agent, I've been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply."

"Jordan has informed us of his intent to retire due to the injury he sustained while at Florida State," GM Darren Mougey said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that he was unable to get back on the field after working so hard. We support his decision and wish him only the best."

Travis, who rehabbed during rookie minicamp last spring, was placed on the Non-Football Injury (NFI list) on July 23, 2024. Travis then was placed on the reserve/not-football list on Aug. 27, 2024.

There were plenty in the Jets fan base who had high hopes for Jordan to make his way back onto the field this summer and possibly even fight his way into contention for the starting job, but it was not to be.

There were reports earlier this season that Travis blamed his setback in his rehab on the Jets. Deiric Jackson, the second-year quarterback’s agent, recently claimed that Travis’ return was delayed after the Jets attempted to rush him onto the field before he was ready.

“His rehab with the Jets was not the best,” Jackson told ESPN's Rich Cimini. "They tried to rush him. It was too fast. There was pressure on the coaching staff and they tried to get him going sooner than the timeline really was. That caused the setback, and we had to shut him down completely.”

Although Jackson didn’t specify the nature of the setback, reports suggest Travis experienced swelling and soreness in his surgically repaired left ankle. A team spokesman defended the Jets and claimed that they adhered to the rehab plan created by Travis’ surgeon.

With Travis now out of the picture for the Jets, there will be some hope for UDFA QB Brady Cook out of Missouri and second year UDFA Adrain Martinez to fight for a spot on the Jets roster as the third/emergency quarterback.
