The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to rest a number of starters in Week 18 against the Denver Broncos.
It was reported by FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer over the weekend that anyone who even has a hangnail won't practice or play in the game. That seems to be true as the team gets the practice week underway on Wednesday. Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to reporters prior to practice and confirmed that three starters would not participate in practice.
"As far as the injuries go, Chris (Jones), (Isiah) Pacheco, and Jawaan (Taylor) won't practice," Reid said. "Jawaan just has some issues with his knee soreness, so we'll hold him from practice today. Mecole (Hardman) will practice. He has been activated to the 21-day window."
Reid indicated on Monday that Hardman could soon make his return to the field after suffering a knee injury that required some sort of surgery. The team will have until Jan. 22 to activate Hardman to the 53-man roster, or he'll remain on injured reserve for the postseason.
As Reid said, RT Jawaan Taylor has a lingering knee injury that has limited his practice time on a few occasions this season. He's unlikely to play on Sunday, so sitting him in practice is a good call.
Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco is dealing with a rib injury he suffered during Week 17's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reid provided an update on Pacheco's injury and his playoff availability on Monday.
Chiefs DT Chris Jones is dealing with a calf injury he suffered at the end of the Week 16 game against the Houston Texans. He sat during the Week 17 game on Christmas Day. Asked whether Jones would've played this week under different circumstances, Reid indicated that he couldn't be certain of that one way or another.
"He's recovering from that," Reid said. "I wouldn't say either on that, whether he'd play or not play. He's recovering from the calf injury, so that's the primary thing. The guys that are banged up, we're trying to get back to where they feel alright."
We'll see what the future holds for each of these three players, but they'll have over 20 days off to prepare before the Chiefs take on their first playoff opponent in the divisional round.
