Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirms suspicions about CB Mansoor Delane’s injury ahead of practice on Wednesday
The Kansas City Chiefs got some good injury news on their star rookie to start off the practice week ahead of Week 2 vs. the Indianapolis Colts.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided his typical pre-practice injury update on Wednesday. Two starters are set to miss practice, but rookie CB Mansoor Delane (shoulder) is expected to return after leaving the game injured Monday night. He also had an unfortunate update about second-year LB Cooper McDonald (knee).
Here’s all of the latest news out of 1 Arrowhead Drive.
Josh Simmons and Chamarri Conner remain out of practice
Josh Simmons (back) and Chamarri Conner (knee) both missed Week 1 due to their injuries. Neither player is practicing on Wednesday ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
“So, the guys who won’t practice today, Chamarri (Conner) and Josh (Simmons),” Reid said. “They are making progress in a positive way. So, that’s good.”
My expectation has been that the Chiefs are targeting a Week 3 return for Josh Simmons. They likely do not want to expose replacement LT Kahlil Benson to a road environment where the team needs to go to the silent count. He struggled with that during the preseason.
Mansoor Delane will practice and is expected to play in Week 2 vs. Colts
Mansoor Delane left the Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos due to a shoulder injury. The fear was that this was a reaggravation of the injury that kept him out of practice in the spring. The good news is that doesn’t appear to be the case after X-ray and MRI testing. Delane will practice in some capacity on Wednesday.
“(Mansoor) Delane is back, and he’ll be out there today doing his thing,” Reid said.
He followed up by saying Delane has a good chance to play in Week 2 vs. the Colts.
“Yeah, there’s a pretty good chance he’ll be back out there,” Reid said. “But yeah, he’s going to go (in practice) today.”
It’s unclear if he’ll be a full participant at this time. We’ll find out when the injury report comes out this afternoon. Even limited participation should put him on track to play on Sunday night.
Cooper McDonald heads to injured reserve with a knee injury
Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that LB Cooper McDonald, who suffered a knee injury on special teams in Week 1, is headed to injured reserve. McDonald is the team’s starting SAM linebacker.
“Cooper McDonald will be on IR,” Reid said. “So, he’s got a four-week window there, and we’ll just see where he’s at after we get to that point.”
Nick Bolton told reporters that Jack Cochrane, not Jeffrey Bassa, would likely fill in for McDonald on defense.
“Yeah, man. Jack (Cochrane) has been one of those guys that’s been with us,” Bolton said. “He’s played every single position. WILL, MIKE, BUCK, and SAM. So full confidence in that guy. He knows the scheme in and out. He’s gonna help us out. But yeah, this next man up entirely. Hopefully, we get Coop back as soon as we can. But I got full confidence in Jack to go out there and do his job.”
