Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gives latest injury update on CB Mansoor Delane following Week 1 win over Denver Broncos
A brief injury update from Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid on rookie CB Mansoor Delane and second-year LB Cooper McDonald.
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered two injuries during their Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos.
They lost rookie CB Mansoor Delane after just three defensive plays. Ironically, Delane appeared to suffer the injury after landing on his shoulder following his 5-yard interception return. He left the game, went back to the locker room, and was ruled questionable to return. When the second half began, Delane was ruled out of the game.
Second-year LB Cooper McDonald suffered a knee injury on special teams shortly after. He was also ruled out of the game at halftime.
“As far as injuries go, (Mansoor) Delane hurt his shoulder; we’ll see where that goes from here,” Reid said. “(Cooper) McDonald hurt his knee; we’ve got to see here in the next day or so where that leads us with both those guys.”
The concerning part here is that this isn’t Delane’s first time with a shoulder injury. He had what the team described as a shoulder blade injury, suffered during OTAs. He missed all of mandatory minicamp and wasn’t able to participate in padded practices until about halfway through training camp. If this is an aggravation of that injury or some sort of extension of it, Delane could legitimately miss time.
Thankfully, the Chiefs seemed prepared for it with Kristian Fulton coming into the game and hardly missing a beat. Delane and McDonald will undergo further evaluation this week. Keep in mind, Kansas City has a short week to prepare for the Indianapolis Colts coming to town on Sunday night.
Despite injury, Mansoor Delane impressed Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid
Typically, when you get hurt just four plays into the game, you don’t have an opportunity to impress. That wasn’t the case for the No. 6 overall pick, Mansoor Delane. His interception got Coach Reid’s attention in a big way.
“But defensively, Delane’s interception there-the one play that he had-he did a nice job with that,” Reid said. “I mean, that was a great job, great way to start the game, and try at the same time to return it.”
It wasn’t just the presence of mind and awareness to make the pick, but getting those few extra yards on the return attempt. That’s something which stood out to Big Red. Hopefully, Rick Burkholder and his staff can get Delane healthy so he can get back out there sooner rather than later to continue making those types of plays.
