The New Orleans Saints chose to move on from head coach Dennis Allen in early November.
Following an embarrassing loss to the Carolina Panthers, the front office had no choice but to make a major change, even though general manager Mickey Loomis was not completely on board with firing Allen.
Now, we've heard from Allen regarding the decision by New Orleans.
The former Saints head coach talked to NFL insider Jay Glazer this past week on his podcast. Allen broke down how he found out that the Saints were moving on from him and how he moved forward after the decision.
"When I think about getting fired – I really think about, this is your company, this is your organization, you have the right to do whatever you want with that. I don't look at it as – I failed. I look at it as – they just decided they wanted to go in a different direction." — Allen via Jay Glazer
The veteran HC also mentioned that he had limited time to alert the team of his firing.
Most of his interactions with players was only a text or phone call. News simply moves too quickly in today's world, and he did not get a real chance to address the entire team together before he had to move on.
"As a prideful man, I didn't want to be walking out of the parking lot with 1,000 cameras on me." — Allen
The entire situation and timing is a bit unfortunate for Allen, but it was the correct move by the Saints. In fact, it probably came too late.
Regardless, now the Saints are in the market for a new full-time head coach. Keep an eye out for more updates on their search in the coming week.
