Saints pick WR with 9th overall pick
9. New Orleans Saints: Luther Burden, WR, Missouri
The leading wide receiver for the Saints this season was Chris Olave, who had just 32 receptions for 400 yards. The wide receiver group needs to get more dynamic, and create some chunk plays after the catch. Burden is a space dynamo who can be a quarterback's best friend.
Burden is an intriguing option here. Selecting a wide receiver makes sense due to the picks before them.
With how the board fell, some of my favorite options for New Orleans were not available. McMillan is the best type of wideout to add to Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed own the depth chart.
Cornerback is a major need, but Will Johnson and Travis Hunter are off the board. The most talented pass rushers along the defensive line are not available in this scenario, either.
As for adding Burden, this would provide notable depth (and upside) at the position for the Saints. Olave has dealt with multiple injuries over the past two years, and Rashid Shaheed is coming off of major surgery that forced him to miss a lot of time in 2024.
Both are young, exciting targets, but grabbing more insurance at WR early in the upcoming draft does seem smart for New Orleans.
While Burden might not be the consensus number one WR in the 2025 draft class anymore, he is still a very talented prospect. He is bound to hear his name in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. If a team is looking to add a dynamic talent to line up in the slot, he will likely be near the top, if not the top option, on their board. His best fit in the NFL would be to land somewhere that would emphasize scheming him into open space and allow him to use his elite instincts as a runner to make big plays.
Adams also compared him to a former Saints WR, Brandin Cooks. He played his best football of his career during his time in black and gold with Sean Payton and Drew Brees.
Overall, I like this pick due to how the board fell for New Orleans. Ohio State star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka may be a safer selection, but either could be on the Saints' radar during this sort of scenario in April.
