The Miami Dolphins' defense took a significant step forward in 2024 under the leadership and direction of new offensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. However, that success could result in a short-lived stint in South Florida.
According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, Weaver is having a second interview with the New Orleans Saints for their head coaching position.
Weaver took over as the Dolphins' defensive coordinator in February 2024 after Vic Fangio and the team mutually agreed to part ways following a tumultuous season by Miami's defense. The moves ended up paying off for all parties involved. It obviously did for Fangio, as the Eagles' defense ranks among the best in the NFL.
Under Weaver's direction, Miami's defense performed well in 2024, particularly considering the roster losses that side of the ball absorbed in the offseason and during the season. Christian Wilkins walked in free agency with no real replacement to fill his shoes. Jordan Poyer was a bust and Jevon Holland had a forgettable contract year on the back end. Bradley Chubb never returned from the December 2023 knee injury, and Jaelan Phillips suffered another season-ending injury after working so hard to return from his Achilles tear in November 2023. Starting corner Kendall Fuller missed multiple games with concussions.
That all being said, Weaver managed to cobble together a game plan with what he had left that kept Miami in enough games to stay in the playoff race throughout the season despite the Dolphins' offense falling completely flat in 2024. The Dolphins finished in the top ten in the league in most major team defense categories – fourth in yards per game (314.3), tenth in points per game (21.4), ninth in rushing yards per game (103.7), and ninth in passing yards per game (210.6).
We'll find out this week if Miami will be able to carry over that momentum into 2025, or if they'll be moving on to their third defensive coordinator in the last calendar year.
