There is a coaching scenario that a lot of Jets fans have in their heads and are convinced should be the route they go with this coaching hire. I see it over and over on social media, and to be honest, a lot of you make it sound so easy. The problem is, it‘s not going to happen.
Scroll through Jets coaching search social media and you will see some version of this tweet from Jake Asman:
Everyone wants the best defensive coach they can name, often Brian Flores, with Josh McCown as his offensive coordinator (I’m ignoring the group of you that want Rex Ryan to be the DC in that scenario, like he is going to be willing to work for Brian Flores instead of being the head coach which is asinine). Never mind the fact that I believe Flores would be an absolute disaster as head coach, the scenario isn’t going to happen because of Josh McCown.
In an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show this week, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that McCown "is going to be in Minnesota next year unless he gets a head coaching job."
I believe the Jets will narrow their extensive list of head coaching candidates this week as more of their prime candidates are ousted from the playoffs and are made available to speak to in person or even be hired. I also believe that the Jets should have Josh McCown on that list as finalist for this job. I would much rather the Jets hire McCown as the head coach of this team than as the offensive coordinator.
McCown is a true a leader. Any place he has ever been, players talk about how they were treated, how a certain standard of professionalism entered the building and how they looked to him for guidance. That is what the Jets should be looking for in a head coach. I would much rather trust him to lead a team than to design and offense and implement it.
We get too bogged down in a coach’s ability to run one side of the ball that we forget that the first thing a head coach is supposed to be, is a leader of men. Let the coordinators deal with the “X’s and O’s”.
Now, that isn’t to say McCown is my first choice as head coach. I’m not in those interviews and I don’t know what coordinators he would be able to bring to his coaching staff. But I would much rather have McCown as the face of my franchise than a man with an open lawsuit against the NFL who told his rookie quarterback “you don’t belong in the NFL”. The fact that McCown isn’t willing to settle for a coordinator job makes me believe him in all the more.
Jets reportedly put an end to speculation on Rex Ryan’s future as head coach in New York
Options continue to dwindle for the New York Jets as the coaching carrousel spins. After the New England Patriots announced that they are hiring Mike Vrabel to be their head coach in one of the most un-surprising moves of the offseason, the Jets not only have to deal with facing him twice a year, but […]
