Cornerback Joshua Williams has been fined $6,398 for an unnecessary roughness penalty that he committed during the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 8 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.
The penalty occurred during a Chiefs punt early in the third quarter. Raiders wide receiver DJ Turner returned the kick for 17 yards and was hit by Williams after Turner was already out of bounds. It set Las Vegas up with great field position at the Kansas City 43-yard line, but the Chiefs defense was able to hold the Raiders to a field goal.
Williams likely didn't mean any ill intent with his late hit. Football is played at a very fast speed and sometimes players aren't able to time things properly. However, most unnecessary roughness incidents are going to draw fines from the league as they have put a point of emphasis on cracking down in that area.
It's never fun to get fined, but Williams has bigger things on his mind moving forward. The Chiefs have lost cornerback Jaylen Watson for the season, meaning an uptick in snaps for Williams. On top of that, fellow cornerback Nazeeh Johnson suffered a concussion last week and will miss Monday night's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Williams will get the start for Johnson, and won't likely get too many plays off with how shorthanded K.C. is at cornerback. Williams has made six starts throughout his three-year NFL career, recording 62 tackles, 12 passes defensed and one interception. He is a big, physical player but can struggle keeping up with some of the speedier receivers at times.
