The National Football League is a cutthroat business and former LSU All-American linebacker Devin White found that out on Wednesday when he was release by the Philadelphia Eagles.
White had just signed with the Eagles this offseason on a one-year, $4 million contract with the hopes of him starting at linebacker but things never quite took off. Instead, White was beaten out by 2022 third-round pick Nakobe Dean and he was a healthy scratch in all five games this season.
Things haven't gone smoothly for White since he was the fifth overall pick in 2019 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a great start to his career that saw him breakout with 9.0 sacks in 2020 and earn second-team All-Pro honors, his deficiencies started to get the best of him and his effectiveness waned. The Buccaneers prioritized keeping Lavonte David over him this offseason which led to the Eagles signing White.
However, don't be surprised if the Buccaneers call up White and bring him back with all the injuries they currently have on defense. If White signs with another team, the Eagles might see some cap relief due to potential offset language.
