The Washington Commanders (7-2), along with a good chunk of the rest of the NFL, are entering the back half of the 2024 season. But, the Commanders are in way better shape than nearly the entire league when it comes to their current playoff positioning.
Right now, Washington leads the NFC East, with the Philadelphia Eagles behind them at 6-2. According to The Athletic's playoff predictor, the Commanders have a 92% chance of making the postseason. ESPN's and Playoffstatus.com's predictors have them at 90% and NFL.com's machine has them at 84%. ESPN gives them a 51% chance to win the NFCE, while The Athletic gives Jayden Daniels and co. a 42% chance.
In terms of remaining strength of schedule, the Commanders are smack dab in the middle of the pack at No. 16. Per Tankathon, their remaining opponents have a .515 winning percentage.
Two of their remaining eight matchups are against the Dallas Cowboys, who are 3-5. The team has definitely underperformed and at least the first of the two games just got a lot easier after Dak Prescott's latest injury update. The Cowboys quarterback is expected to miss several weeks with a hamstring injury that turned out to be a lot worse than previously thought. There's also a chance he goes on IR, which would him knock him out of the next four games, at minimum.
Prescott isn't the only Cowboys star to be dealing with injuries. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is currently dealing with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. Reports are there's a chance plays in Week 10 against the Eagles, but it's not guaranteed. If he does play, there's always a chance of aggravating the injury to where it affects his availability against the Commanders in a few weeks.
It's unclear whether the Cowboys turn to Trey Lance or Cooper Rush while Prescott is out. Rush went 5-1 a couple of years ago while Prescott missed time with an injury, but Lance wasn't on the roster, then. The former top-3 overall pick could receive a chance to get his career on track after things didn't work out in San Francisco, but that remains to be seen.
Washington plays the Cowboys for the first time this year on November 24, which is Week 12 of the 2024 season.
Commanders are almost a lock to do something they haven’t done in years and not many people saw it coming
The Washington Commanders surpassed Vegas' season projection of 6.5 wins after beating the New York Giants on Sunday, which is awfully impressive when considering we just passed the halfway point of the season. Jayden Daniels has been lights-out and even better than advertised and Dan Quinn has done an outstanding job of rebuilding the roster, […]
