The running game powered Notre Dame football to a 35 to 14 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday. On the day, the Irish backfield rushed for 234 yards as a team, averaging a stellar 6.2 yards per carry. A big part of that was sophomore sensation Jeremiyah Love who finished with 137 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries.

During the victory, Love also moved up in the record books for the Irish. Dating back to their bowl win last season, the St. Louis native has scored a touchdown in 11 straight football games. That obvious includes the first 10 of this season, which is now tied for second in school history with former Irish greats Jerome Bettis and Autry Denson.

The last name Bettis brings back a lot of memories for Notre Dame fans everywhere. They of course remember Jerome Bettis as the star running back in the 1990s, who went on to rush for 13,662 yards and scored 94 total touchdowns during his 13 year NFL career.

Denson is much more ignored in Notre Dame history, but he is actually the program’s all time leading rusher. In four seasons, Denson rushed for 4,318 yards and 43 touchdowns. He ran for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons to end his career. Denson obviously ended up coaching the Irish running backs for several years.

It is hard not to marvel over the talent of Love. He may be their most gifted runner they have had in several years, and arguably ever.
