A devasting injury struck the Indianapolis Colts with the news of second-year cornerback Juju Brents being placed on injury reserve due to a knee injury suffered in their Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans.
The team signed veteran CB Chris Lammons to their active roster to fill the opening left by Brents being placed on IR. Now, the team has filled the open spot on their practice squad previously held by Lammons, with the Colts reportedly signing CB Kelvin Joseph.
Kelvin Joseph
The Dallas Cowboys drafted Kelvin Joseph with the 44th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent two years with the Cowboys before being traded to the Miami Dolphins. There, he only lasted a little over a month before the team waived him, and he would finish the 2023 season with the Seattle Seahawks.
During his pro career, he has appeared in 31 games and recorded 39 total tackles, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He most recently spent training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs before being waived as part of their move to cut their roster down to 53.
Joseph will turn 25 in November. Following Brents' injury, he will now attempt to show the Colts he can be an asset on their active roster. The team doesn't have many options for playing on the outside as a CB, which gives Joseph a leg up on the other corners currently on the team's practice squad. He has solid size to play on the outside at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds.
This is an intriguing move by the Colts to take a shot at a young CB who hasn't been able to catch on in the league at this point. But if they want to improve their secondary immediately, it's going to require bigger swings on the free agency market.
Joseph has already reacted via his personal X account to his signing with the Colts, and I'd say he is ready to get to work. So, whether this move ends up being fruitful for the Colts or not, it's nice to see Joseph already motivated to make the most of this opportunity.
