At 9-1, the Philadelphia Eagles have found support in the franchise quarterback — Jalen Hurts.
Coming into a Week 12 matchup with the hobbled Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, Hurts isn't letting the moment get too big. He's approaching the game the same way he has all season — even-keeled.
"I just try not to ever get too high, never get too low, and that’s in every area of my game," Hurts said on Wednesday. "You talk about the temperature of the room, I set the temperature. … I set the emotion and just go. It’s in the preparation, it’s in the trust in the people around you, it’s all-inclusive of those around you."
For years, Rodgers has been the NFL quarterback standard-bearer. Sunday could serve as a changing of the guard. Hurts represents the future of the quarterback position. Rodgers signifies its past. Yes, Hurts lacks what some may call generational arm talent, but he doesn't make mistakes, makes all the right throws, and he creates offense with his legs that other quarterbacks not named Lamar Jackson could only dream of.
The thought of upstaging Rodgers in primetime is tantalizing. But Hurts isn't using it as an excuse to get in over his head.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for guys [that] they play the game in their way, and they’re efficient in the way they do it," Hurts said. "Aaron Rodgers has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks throughout his time. And I have a lot of respect for him."
In a circular series of events, Hurts got his start against Green Bay in 2020. But Hurts says that moment isn't in his mind. Two years later, he is now focused on merely winning the game and besting one of the legends at the quarterback position.
