PITTSBURGH – New Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett has a lot on his plate. He's not just any rookie. That's already hard enough. He's also the 20th overall pick of the draft and the hopeful franchise quarterback of the future. And he has to get things figured out in just a matter of months.

"I can't give you the hours per day, it's just til I feel comfortable with it," Pickett said when asked about how much time he's devoting to learning the Steelers' offense. "So, it's studying here until we get let out and taking it back to the hotel and having my iPad out.

"Like I said, just doing as much as I can to feel good out here so I can play fast. That's the number one key."

That's a lot. So much so that Pickett's time has been taken up to the point where he doesn't even know who the Steelers play in 2022.

"I can't tell you who we're playing at all, to be honest with you," Pickett said with a grin after Day 1 of rookie minicamp. "I just did the first install of walkthroughs, so we have a long time until then. But I'm sure it's a great schedule."

That's the exact excuse you want to hear for not knowing the schedule. But even then, it's not really an excuse. Pickett's right. It's not necessarily important to know who the Steelers play in 2022. Right now, the focus is getting as comfortable as he can in Matt Canada's offense by learning as much as possible. And then applying it, of course.

Once he gets comfortable in the offense and knows what he's doing, he can then focus on how to apply what he's learned to what he's seeing from opposing defenses on film.

How can he take advantage of a defense if he doesn't even know what play to call or what receiver to throw to during a play?

Pickett knows exactly what he's doing and his approach is right. However, he owes himself a little bit of fun by taking just the slightest of peeks at the schedule.
