Every single year it seems more and more NFL Draft prospects choose to opt out of various NFL Combine drills and activities. Just last year, Bryce Young, the first overall pick in last year's draft, chose not to throw at the NFL Combine at all.
Yes, Young had hurt his shoulder in October of 2022, so some assumed that was his rationale for sitting out. However, he had returned from injury and played well in Alabama's bowl game against Kansas State. Instead Young chose to throw at the Alabama pro day, a more controlled, rehearsed environment where he could show off his skills individually.
This year we may have some more quarterbacks choose to opt out of throwing yet again. Jordan Travis (QB, Florida State) has good medical reasons not to participate. A few other top names may also abstain as their early draft capital is already locked in. However, one top quarterback prospect made his intentions clear today.
Michael Penix Jr. will be throwing at the NFL Combine next week, according to ESPN's Jordan Reid.
After a less than perfect performance in his final collegiate game against Michigan in the national championship Penix seems like he has more to prove. He did have a good (not spectacular) week at the Senior Bowl, but for some reason Penix's draft stock seems to be falling a bit in recent weeks.
A strong showing of his arm talent at the NFL Combine could be just the right thing to push Michael Penix Jr. back into the mix for QB4 consideration among scouts and the NFL Draft community as a whole.
He and Bo Nix have long been considered closely linked, battling it out for the QB5 spot in the 2024 NFL Draft behind J.J. McCarthy (as his draft stock continues to rise), but there's still time for Penix to remind everyone how and why he was able to dominate college football for much of the last two seasons. That begins next week at the NFL Combine.
