Update: The Panthers have hired Dan Morgan as GM/President of Football Ops will a Brandt Tilis hire follow? Stay tuned.

The Kansas City Chiefs could soon lose one of their top front-office executives to another NFL franchise.

The Carolina Panthers recently interviewed Chiefs VP of Football Ops Brandt Tilis for a role in their front office. At the time, it was presumed to be a role for the Panthers' GM vacancy after Scott Fitterer was fired. Now it appears that it might be for another role as the Panthers explore what could be a unique front office structure.

According to a recent report from The Athletic's Joe Person, the Panthers are leaning toward keeping assistant GM Dan Morgan on in some capacity. Morgan would likely be in charge of the personnel side of things and they'd look to pair him with someone like Tilis, who has a background in contracts and the salary cap.

"Some in league circles believe Tepper could be looking to pair Morgan with an executive with a salary cap and contracts background such as Halaby or Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, who interviewed with the Panthers this year and in 2021 before Fitterer was hired."

The MMQB's Albert Breer echoed this sentiment in his Monday morning column, explaining that he anticipates Morgan to stick around and be paired with someone like Tilis. The key would be about how their jobs are titled according to Breer. Would Morgan and Tilis be co-general managers in title? It's certainly possible.

Losing Tilis would be a big blow to the Chiefs' organization. He has been the team's salary-cap expert for many years now, playing a vital role in many negotiations and the unique structure of Patrick Mahomes' record-setting contract in 2020. Needless to say, losing Tilis would be a big blow for a Kansas City team that needs to be frugal and selective in free agency during this juncture of Mahomes' career.

Finding and signing free agents like Charles Omenihu, Mike Edwards, and Drue Tranquill will be that much tougher without an executive like Tilis working the books.
