Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Tee Martin was named this week as a potential option for a recently opened college football head coaching job.
On Monday, news broke that new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is set to hire South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack as his defensive coordinator.
Wommack, who had been the head coach at South Alabama since 2021, was Indiana's defensive coordinator from 2019 to 2020. He worked alongside DeBoer at Indiana in 2019 (when DeBoer was the Hoosiers' offensive coordinator — the pair of play callers lost to Jeremy Pruitt and Tennessee in the Gator Bowl at the end of the 2019 season).
AL.com quickly named Martin, who is currently the Baltimore Ravens' quarterbacks coach, as an option to replace Wommack as the head coach at South Alabama.
Martin is an Alabama native who is still searching for his first head coaching opportunity.
From AL.com: Martin, 45, is a Mobile native and is very popular among local fans and high school coaches. Though he’s never been a college head coach, he has major-program experience at USC (where he was offensive coordinator from 2016-18), Tennessee and Kentucky, among other stops. He’s also worked the last three years with one of the best-run organizations in the NFL, and coaches the likely league MVP this year in Lamar Jackson. With the Ravens in the hunt for the Super Bowl, however, it’s questionable if South Alabama could wait on Martin to become available.
Martin makes a lot of sense as a candidate at South Alabama, but the timing is a bit tricky. The Ravens are the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and they have a legitimate shot to reach the Super Bowl. Martin's full focus is almost certainly on helping the Ravens win a championship. And South Alabama probably doesn't want to potentially wait until February to hire a head coach.
There's also the fact that Martin could receive some interest as an offensive coordinator in the NFL — especially with all the coaching movement that's happening this offseason.
Martin's last job at the college level was in 2019/2020 when he served as Tennessee's wide receivers coach.
