Breaking records isn't anything new for the Kansas City Chiefs, but the latest long-standing record that they've vanquished shows just how incredible this team has been with Patrick Mahomes as its quarterback.
As first declared by NFL writer Scott Kacsmar, the Chiefs' Week 2 victory over the Jaguars means Kansas City now holds the NFL's record for the most consecutive games without losing by more than four points. They've gone 35 consecutive games without losing by more than four points.
The record was last reached by the 1965-67 Green Bay Packers, who tied the 1940-42 Bears with 34 consecutive games without losing by more than four points. For the mathematically challenged, that record has stood for 55 years and 8 months give or take.
You have to go all the way back to Week 7 of the 2021 NFL season to find the last game that Kansas City lost by more than four points. It was a 27-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans and it was a big wake-up call for the Chiefs as they rattled off eight consecutive wins after that loss.
One reason that the team now holds this record is because they haven't done much losing in the last 35 games. They have a 29-6 record during that span, with five regular-season losses and one playoff loss. It just goes to show how great K.C. has been under the leadership of star QB Patrick Mahomes and HC Andy Reid. Not only are they winning a ton of football games, but they're highly competitive in the few games that they do happen to lose.
We hear all the time about the increasing parity in the NFL and how hard it is to win games. Well, over the past 35 games the Chiefs have been historically good at making sure they end up on the right side of that parity. With the Chicago Bears on deck in Week 3, they could even look to extend this record further into the 2023 NFL season.
