While the starting quarterback question has appeared to be answered all week, one report has now made it official.
According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Patriots will start Bailey Zappe against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Quarterback Malik Cunningham, who is currently on the practice squad, has a package of plays the team has been working on with him this week.
As for Jones, Howe explains that he is "unlikely to play, unless circumstances change during the game."
ESPN's Mike Reiss further reported that the expectation is that Cunningham will be elevated to the active roster prior to the game. It is uncertain at this time who will be released to make room for the rookie quarterback.
On Wednesday, Zappe was seen taking the majority of reps during the media-attended portion of practice, with Cunningham being rotated in. Jones and Will Grier did not take a single snap.
Howe confirmed what reporters saw, saying earlier in the week that the Patriots were "preparing QB Bailey Zappe to start Sunday against the Chargers."
And now he has earned the start after a week of practice.
The starting job has been Mac Jones' since the start of the season, but the third-year quarterback has now been benched four times. Yet it seems now, instead of getting benched mid-game, Jones is getting benched prior to the game.
Let's see if Zappe can provide a much-needed spark for the team.
