A roster move entering Week 15 of the NFL season rarely makes national headlines, but the most recent move by the Indianapolis Colts does just that.
They are signing 11-year veteran OT Jared Veldheer to their practice squad.
Veldheer is now coming out of retirement and signing with the Colts practice squad. The Oakland Raiders drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Along with the Raiders, Veldheer spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, and, most recently, the Indianapolis Colts in 2020.
The Colts signed Veldheer ahead of their playoff game against the Buffalo Bills in 2020, where he started for the team. His time with the Colts would only be for a game, though, as they lost to the Bills in the wildcard round. Veldheer was released from the Colts following their loss to clear the way for him to sign with the Packers. He was set to become the first player ever to start for two different teams during the same playoffs, but a positive Covid test ended that dream.
Entering the following season, Velheer was suspended for six games by the NFL for using a banned substance. Veldheer explained that he was using medication due to him having abnormally low testosterone, which he believed was a result of repeated blows to the head during his NFL career.
Velheer retired after the suspension was announced and, therefore, never served out this punishment. I can't think of a similar situation ever happening before. That will be interesting to monitor now that he has returned to the NFL. And whether or not he still will have to serve that six-game suspension.
