Frustrated Jets' Garrett Wilson calls out coaches

The day after the season ends is always an emotional one for players and coaches. So much changes each off-season. Guys are away from each other and lose the locker room comradery. Some guys know they are coming back. Some guys aren’t sure if they will be asked back. Still others don’t know if they will even be playing football.

Because of the high emotions we get a lot of truth from players as they are asked to reflect on the past and speculate on the future.

By all measurables, considering what the New York Jets dealt with at the quarterback position, second-year wide receiver Garrett Wilson had a great year. But he doesn’t want to hear that.

"I hear that I had a good year, but it was the worst season of my life. Thank you, but that's the reality of it."

Wilson has been in the NFL for two years and has dealt with nothing but frustration. Despite being one of the premier young receivers in the game, his offensive unit is downright laughable. Frankly, he is sick of it.

With the emotion of speaking with the media after clearing out his locker after another disappointing season, Wilson laid it all out and it seems like his frustrations aren’t with who is throwing the ball, but with who is calling the plays.

"What happened this season can't happen again. It's got to be better. We've got to make adjustments in the game. We've got to do things to counter what we're getting and be able to put points on the board because honestly, in the two years I've been here, it's been tough,” Wilson said. “Football hasn't been this hard as far as offense. I watch it on the sideline and it doesn't look that hard for the other team.”

He's absolutely correct. The Jets looked like a rudderless ship on offense. I realize offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was brought in to work with Aaron Rodgers, but his performance as a play-caller this year would have gotten any other coach fired.

As far as if Aaron Rodgers will solve the problems, Wilson isn’t so sure, but he is optimistic.

"We've got to figure something out to get it rolling, no matter who's slinging it. I know Aaron will be an offense in itself because that's just what he brings to the table,” Wilson said. “He's special, man. I pray that everyone in the world gets to see that next year. But, yeah, what happened this year can't happen again."

Another issue in the disaster that was the Jets offense this season (and there were a lot which don’t need to be addressed in this article), was the lack of a viable second option in the passing game. Allen Lazard was an absolute disaster in his first year, Randall Cobb is on the team to be Aaron Rodgers’ buddy and the Jets only had undrafted rookies behind them.

Robert Saleh said it will be "very important" to find another threat to take some attention off Garrett Wilson in the passing game next year. General manager Joe Douglas when asked about Garrett Wilson’s comments said, "I need to do more to help this offense, I need to do more."

That’s sounds well and good, but this coming from a GM who can’t even give a legitamite reason why Robert Saleh is still the head coach (for the record, I think the Jets were right to bring back Saleh for one more shot with Rodgers).

When asked why he thinks Robert Saleh is the right man for this job Douglas replied, "Robert is the right coach because he's the right man for the job." What?!

Joe Douglas sounds like an AI twitter bot. For someone who has a lot of questions to answer, Joe Douglas sounds like he is happy to give platitudes instead of solutions.

Young NFL players have more power than ever and can force their way out of a bad situation, and right now the Jets are a bad situation. Joe Douglas, Robert Saleh and Nathaniel Hackett need to get it fixed this off season or the Jets could be watching Garrett Wilson thrive in another uniform and talk about what might have been.

Jets are wasting Garrett Wilson with terrible offense

Garrett Wilson is a rare talent. He is a true, bona fide number one receiver in the NFL. He is also being wasted by the New York Jets. Wilson ended the 30-0 loss against the Miami Dolphins with three receptions on only four targets for a measly 29 yards. The Jets couldn’t manage anything offensively […]
