The NFL and reunions. They go together like socks and shoes. Sometimes, they complete a nice wardrobe. Other times, they're sweaty and smell bad.
For the New Orleans Saints, they may be making a move to reunite Derek Carr with one of his former head coaches.
According to Jeff Duncan, the Saints are considering Jon Gruden as a potential addition to their coaching staff.
Of course, Gruden spent four seasons with the Saints QB. Those were arguably the best years of Carr's career so far. Carr recorded the two highest passer efficiency ratings of his career in 2019 and 2020 (100.8, 101.4).
According to Duncan, Gruden could join the staff in a role that is not offensive coordinator. In short, he would not replace Pete Carmichael Jr. in title. That's still to be determined, though, and play-calling duties may not go to Gruden.
The Saints and Gruden met with Gruden in Tampa last week.
There are still plenty of questions to answer regarding the potential hire, but there's mutual interest between the two sides – at the least.
Mike Triplett reports that Gruden's meeting with members of the Saints organization was described as a 'friendly relationship' meeting – rather than a job interview/connection, though.
Gruden is sixty years old. He won the Super Bowl as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003. He has an extensive coaching history within the NFL.
He is also dealing with a legal case with the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell. That stems from his 2021 resignation from the HC job for the Las Vegas Raiders after offensive emails he sent when he was an ESPN announcer were made public.
