NFL legend Tom Brady had a big night on Wednesday night when the New England Patriots held a huge ceremony for him and officially retired his number 12 uniform. To commemorate that, ESPN released a ranking of their top 50 Tom Brady performances.
Surprisingly the Detroit Lions only made the list one time despite Brady having some pretty good games against them. The game that they included was all the way back on Thanksgiving 2010. They ranked it as his 37th best performance.
Brady had a monster game in this one. He went 21-27 for 341 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-24 win over the Lions. Here's what ESPN had to say about the game:
"The 2010 Patriots had the second-best offense ever tracked by DVOA, trailing only the 2007 Patriots. But Brady spread his greatness evenly across most of the season, so only three specific games had enough DYAR to make our top 50 list. The lowest of the three is this Thanksgiving outing against a surprisingly above-average Detroit Lions pass defense.
The Patriots were losing to the 2-8 Lions midway through the third quarter until Brady threw the ball 40 yards down the left sideline to Branch, who reversed field a couple of times on outmatched Lions cornerback Alphonso Smith and ran the last 39 yards after the catch for the game-tying touchdown. After that, the Patriots scored the final 28 points, including fourth-quarter touchdowns to both Branch (his second of the game) and Welker (also his second of the game)."
Brady played seven games against the Lions during his career. The Lions were only able to win two of those games. One in 2000 that doesn't really count. It was the first time Brady had played in a regular season game and he only threw three passes. The other one came in 2018. That one does count.
The game that I would add to Brady's top 50 would be the 2020 game in Detroit where Brady absolutely went off on the Lions. He completed 81% of his passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-7 bloodbath.
Brady's total stat line against the Lions is 141-204 for 1,692 yards 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.
