Cap Wizard, Khai Harley. That's his title in the New Orleans Saints front office, right? Maybe not – but it should be. He's made another intriguing move to clear cap space for the black and gold.
This time, the timing is especially notable. The Saints just made a restructure that cleared a chunk of cap space on a Thursday in June. It feels like an addition is coming.
Saints restructure Taysom Hill's contract to free $6.6 million in cap space
The Saints restructured the contract of TE Taysom Hill, converting $8.79 million of salary into a signing bonus and creating $6.59 million in the process. Hill’s 2025 salary cap number will increase by $2.19 million to $17.986 million. There is now $9.7 million in void year salary cap charges that are set to hit the salary cap in 2026 if Hill’s contract voids.
This marks the third year in a row that the Saints have restructured Hill’s contract for cap relief. The team converted $9 million in 2022, $8.8 million in 2023, and now $8.79 million in 2024. If released next year the Saints would face a dead money charge of $17.7 million due to all of the restructures. — OverTheCap
Now, the Saints have $12M in cap space for 2024.
The decision certainly raises eyebrows. Could the Saints have a potential signing or trade for a big-time player on the horizon? That seems somewhat likely with how much space they just created.
Justin Simmons, Safety
The Saints' biggest hole on defense is depth at safety. Tyrann Mathieu is still playing good football and is a leader of the unit. Jordan Howden emerged in 2023, but he is still a young player when it comes to NFL experience.
Simmons is a Pro Bowl talent that remains a free agent. He led the NFL in interceptions in 2022. Adding a player like that to the Saints defense can change the entire outlook of the upcoming season.
Offensive line
The Saints OL has some unproven pieces. With Ryan Ramczyk potentially out due to injury, Trevor Penning is the projected starter at RT. The interior has two proven starters, but the other guard spot is a major question mark. New Orleans could make a move for a notable OL piece to protect QB Derek Carr.
We will see how the Saints use this cap space. Regardless, a move seems to be coming soon.
Saints starter suffers injury that will sideline him for awhile
Not great news.
