CBS Sports thinks a former Kansas City Chiefs first round draft pick could be a "surprise cut" ahead of the start of the regular season.

On Friday, the national sports media outlet listed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire as a potential cut candidate.

Edwards-Helaire, who was teammates at LSU with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, was selected by the Chiefs with the No. 32 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft,

From CBS Sports: The 2020 first-rounder has fallen to No. 3 on the RB depth chart at best, with Isiah Pacheco a justified starter and Jerick McKinnon locked into a secondary pass-catching role. The Chiefs could save close to $1M by parting ways with the LSU product.

When Edwards-Helaire has been on the field, he's been a productive player at times for the Chiefs.

Last season, Edwards-Helaire scored five touchdowns in the first four games of the season before his production trailed off before he was eventually placed on injured reserve (he missed seven games).

It's worth noting that Edwards-Helaire saw a significant percentage of snaps in the Chiefs' second preseason game (starter Isiah Pacheco didn't play).

Playing that many snaps could be good or bad for Edwards-Helaire's future in Kansas City. It could mean that the Chiefs plan to utilize him in a key backup role if Pacheco goes down. Or it might mean that Kansas City was just allowing Edwards-Helaire to put some good snaps on film that way if he's released, he'll have some preseason tape to use to find another gig in the NFL.

Either way, it's clear that Edwards-Helaire is on the roster bubble. And if he's released, he probably won't be looking for a new team for long.
