The Indianapolis Colts were hit with some unfortunate news earlier this offseason when it was revealed that one of their key players violated the NFL gambling policy. Starting defensive back Isaiah Rodgers was the culprit, leaving question marks for the Colts' defense.
Speculation was immediately raised about how long Rogers might be out. Jacksonville Jaguars wideout Calvin Ridley received a season-long suspension, while Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams was hit with six games.
This week, it is being reported what penalty Rodgers will face. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter shared on Wednesday that Rodgers will likely be suspended for the 2023 NFL season.
Schefter reported that Rodgers is one of a "handful" of players in the league expected to miss the entire upcoming season due to breaking the league policy. Rodgers was initially reported to be involved in gambling earlier this month.
"I want to take full responsibility for my actions. I know I have made mistakes and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation," Rodgers wrote in a statement when reports initially surfaced. "The last thing I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates."
Rodgers had emerged as a valuable player on the Colts' roster. In addition to his role at cornerback, Rodgers also contributed in the return game on special teams. Now, the Colts know how long they will be without an important starter.
"I made an error in judgment and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes are rectified through this process," Rodgers said in his early-June statement. "It's an honor to play in the NFL and I have never taken that lightly. I am very sorry for all of this."
