The Jacksonville Jaguars will be expecting a lot from their star running back this fall. In what was effectively his rookie season last year, Etienne put together a very strong performance. With 1125 rushing yards at a sterling 5.1 yards per carry, he proved he could be a featured NFL running back.
It also appears many around the league took notice.
Just as Evan Engram did this week, Etienne found his name mentioned as part of the list of top 10 running backs in the league formulated by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. And like all other positions, the ranking is based on input and voting from NFL executives, scouts, coaches, and players.
While he didn't find himself among the top 10, he did earn an honorable mention.
Etienne recovered from a lost rookie year to injury and showcased major splash-play ability. Etienne's four rushes of 40 or more yards tied Derrick Henry and Justin Fields for a league high. He finished with 1125 rushing yards, which ranked ninth. "Good back, good speed, was getting healthy — might have a breakout year," a veteran NFL scout said. "Not a physical back but can do enough." – Jeremy Fowler, ESPN.com
Etienne's big play ability is what separates himself from most other backs in the league. With the ball in his hands, there are few running backs in the league that are as much of a threat to find the end zone on any given play.
While running backs are considered by some to be replaceable or interchangeable, there are certain things that some players do that many others can't. That's what separates backs like Etienne from many others.
If Etienne can find himself having a breakout season, like said scout predicts he could this fall, then Jaguars fans will likely be watching Etienne taking handoffs at TIAA Bank Field in the playoffs once again. And Etienne might find himself on several exclusive NFL lists.
