The Indianapolis Colts made the move to hire former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as its next head coach earlier this offseason. It was a move that signaled the organization wanted a young, offensive-mind running the show.
Steichen turned the Eagles into the most dangerous rushing offense in the NFL last season. The new Colts head coach unlocked Jalen Hurts by using his legs and implementing the RPO game.
Which is why experts believe that Anthony Richardson could be set for a monster rookie season. Richardson is a dynamic threat throwing or running the football and that plays right into Steichen's scheme.
In fact, BetOnline believes Richardson will be one of the most prolific rushers at the quarterback position during the 2023 NFL season. Despite not even being named the stater yet, Richardson has 50/1 odds to lead the league in rushing per the sportsbook.
That is just behind Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams and right ahead of Los Angeles Chargers star Austin Ekeler. Which says a lot about what expectations are for Richardson and his legs.
But even more interesting, Richardson sits with the same odds as Eagles star and former Steichen-coached quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts is coming off a season in which he rushed for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns.
If Richardson can outproduce those numbers, it will show that one: he is thriving right out of the gate and two: Steichen's offense is working. Because the running lanes will be there time and time again if his RPO-heavy scheme is hitting on all cylinders.
Nonetheless, it's clear that expectations are high for Richardson as he prepares for his first season in the NFL. BetOnline projects him to one of the most dangerous rushers in the league as soon as he steps onto the field.
