The quarterback situation in the AFC South remains up in the air, including for the Indianapolis Colts. Aside from the Jacksonville Jaguars, the rest of the division has been speculated about making a move at signal caller.
Indianapolis is widely expected to add their quarterback of the future in the fast approaching 2023 NFL Draft. There was some Lamar Jackson smoke at one point, but the franchise appears to be focused on the first-round.
Then, there's the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans. Houston could draft a QB at No. 2, but recent buzz suggests that's far from a lock. Tennessee, meanwhile, has been linked to different passers this offseason despite having Ryan Tannehill on the roster.
The latest bit of NFL rumor mill points to the division possibly shaking up in a big way. That's because the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly taking calls to trade quarterback Trey Lance.
Both the Texans and Titans have been mentioned about possible trade partners with the 'Niners. Lance was the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, but he suffered an early season-ending injury last season.
The expectation seems to be that the team will roll with Brock Purdy moving forward. If that is indeed the case and the 49ers trade away Lance in the next week, it would have some important ramifications in the NFL Draft.
If it's the Texans that make the trade, that would mean that the team would not be selecting a QB at No. 2 overall. Which would therefore leave another quarterback on the board for the Colts to choose from.
And if it's the Titans that make the trade, it would mean signal that they are moving on from Tannehill. Newly-hired Titans general manager Ron Carthon is very familiar with Lance thanks to his time inside the 49ers' front office.
Either way, there is potential for major shakeup in the AFC South at the quarterback position. The Indianapolis Colts are just over a week away from getting their answer at the position.
