The Indianapolis Colts are hoping that they hit a grand slam with their first-round draft selection. Indianapolis stayed put at No. 4 overall and selected intriguing Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.
Richardson has all of the upside in the world. More than that, he has impressive film of completing big-time throws, fitting the football in small windows, and making plays that very few at the position can.
Expectations will be high for Richardson. Which is expected, given that he was drafted inside the top-five. He has the opportunity to make some history with the Indianapolis Colts during his rookie season.
Two things immediately jump out about the 6-4, 244-pound Richardson: his cannon of an arm and his ability to make plays outside of the pocket. The latter of which gives him a realistic chance to rewrite the record book in year-one.
Former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck currently holds the franchise record in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns by a rookie signal caller. He rushed for 255 yards and five touchdowns during his initial NFL season in 2012.
Eclipsing both should be achievable for Richardson in the fall. For one, he is a dynamic rusher in the open field and with 4.43 speed. He rushed for 1,055 yards and 12 touchdowns during his two seasons as a starter at Florida – including nine scores in 2022.
But maybe just as importantly, Steichen's offense has proven to be effective with a running quarterback. Jalen Hurts took his game to another level under Steichen's coaching, rushing for 700+ yards and 10+ touchdowns in each of his two seasons with the Colts' coach running the offense in Philadelphia.
Therefore, the opportunities should be there for Richardson to showcase his legs in a big way right out of the gate. His fit with Shane Steichen points to Richardson sitting atop the record book by the end of his rookie campaign.
