The Detroit Lions like Jared Goff a lot and he's expected to be a part of the franchise for a foreseeable future. There's been talk of an extension going back to May and Lions GM Brad Holmes updated us at the trade deadline that the talks had been ongoing and the dialogue was good. Still, we've been waiting to get an idea of when the extension would happen. Turns out that could be very soon.

The Athletic’s Kalyn Kahler wrote a very good article on Jared Goff and how the Lions belief in him helped him turn his career around. She spoke with Goff's agent Ted Tollner for the story and he told Kahler that he believes the Lions and Goff will agree to an extension early into the offseason.

Tollner also put to bed any idea that the Lions might wait until after next season to sign Goff to see how he would do without Ben Johnson. Something that some Lions fans believe the team should do. He also said that the Lions told Goff and himself that this season wasn't a "prove it" year for Goff either.

“They said all the right things to Jared and to me, that (this season) is not about him having to prove himself for another year,” Tollner said. “Inevitably, players always feel that way. If you don’t make a long-term commitment, then they feel like you don’t completely believe in them.”

As for what the terms of the extension will be, that's something we'll have to wait to hear on. Due to the current market and the Lions success, there's reason to believe that Goff could wind up being one of the highest paid players in the NFL and the Lions may look to lock him up for potentially the rest of the decade.

We'll have any other Goff extension news and news on the extension itself as soon as information comes in.
