Buffalo Bills receiver Tyrell Shavers has been impressive through training camp and the preseason, with many speculating he’ll land on the team’s 53-man roster. After a one-handed touchdown catch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he may have cemented his spot on the roster. Coach Sean McDermott expressed that some of the players lower on the depth chart need to be versatile, something Shavers fully understands and is more than ready for the challenge. Whether or not some additional responsibilities would be difficult, he’s not shying away. A perfect response from the receiver.

“I’m able to do whatever I’m asked to do,” Shavers said. “Whether that’s special teams or offense, inside or outside, whatever you need me to do, I’m able to do it.”

Tyrell Shavers 2025 NFL preseason

Now, that’s not saying Shavers’ touchdown was the only reason the team will keep him. He’s been a reliable target throughout the preseason and has shown his skill set on the special teams unit as well. On offense, he’s hauled in six receptions on 10 targets for 123 yards and a touchdown with an average of 20.5 yards per reception. Despite an incredibly small sample size, if you took his numbers and put them against his peers and weighed his preseason against the 2024 regular season, he would’ve been sitting at third in the NFL behind Alec Pierce (22.3) and Christian Watson (21.4). For those data nerds out there, Keon Coleman finished last season fourth in this department (19.2). This includes players like Austin Trammell, who only had two catches for 40 yards.

For special teams, Shavers recorded 55 total snaps (20 on kick return, 11 on kick coverage, 15 on punt return, and nine on punt coverage) that netted him two tackles and two assisted tackles. In fact, after his impressive one-handed grab, he assisted in pushing the runner out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff. That type of play is exactly what McDermott is talking about, and it was further proof that he deserves a spot.

Shavers was asked about his journey with the Bills, fighting to earn his spot on the roster. A candid but personal response that’s yet another reason why the Bills Mafia fell in love with the camp darling. With culture being such an important component of this team, Shavers is fitting right in.

“A rollercoaster, but a blessing,” Shavers said. “It’s been fun, I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I’m happy that I came here, I’m happy that I started my career here. I’ve been here, I wouldn’t want it any other way, honestly.”

The receiver has been working his tail off, trying to take his game to the next level and earn a spot on an NFL roster. For Shavers, it has always been and will always be about Buffalo. Letting reporters know what the past few months had looked like for him before camp began.

“The work I put in the offseason, I stayed here over the summer just getting right, getting ready, and getting prepared,” Shavers said. “Now it’s just time to let the chips fall where they may.”

Tyrell Shavers is ready for the challenge

Entering a high-powered offense can be daunting for any player, but Shavers is up and ready for the challenge. He wants to add an extra layer to an already impressive unit, while giving the team its flowers. An absolute class act, and yet another reason fans are clamoring for him to make the cut.

“Super comfortable, I love it. I can play any position, anywhere, anything they need from me, I can do it,” Shavers said. “I know the offense like the back of my hand [. . .] I love being in this offense, the best offense in the NFL.”

Wrapping it up, Shavers was asked about what he thought his chances were and if he’s done enough to secure a spot on the roster. Honestly, we couldn’t agree more.

“One hundred percent, I definitely did,” Shavers said. “I put all the cards on the table, I showed what I can do, we’ll see where it goes from there.”

All that’s left to do is wait (and keep rewatching his touchdown, it was one of the best across the entire NFL preseason) to see what the team’s final decision ultimately is. The deadline is 4 p.m. ET Aug. 26. Here’s hoping that we don’t see “Shavers” and “waived” coming through the transaction reports.
