Ryan Day drops a simple but real message that Ohio State QB Julian Sayin should follow in his first start against Texas
It is a big one in The Shoe to start the college football seasons.
The big showdown to kick off the college football season in dramatic fashion is just days away. When the Ohio State Buckeyes host Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns, all eyes will be on Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
While the Manning era is beginning at Texas, Ryan Day and the Buckeyes will be rolling out their own former five-star quarterback.
Day has a simple but crucial message for Alabama transfer Julian Sayin as he makes his first start on Saturday:
“The message is just win. Find a way to win,” Day said via Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors. “I think when you start setting expectations, you can get yourself out of whack. We’re gonna take it one play at a time. He’s got a good group of guys around him, he’s got a good defense, he’s got good special teams, a good offensive line, good skill guys — he needs to lean into those players and find a way to win the game. We’ll try to get him into a rhythm and go from there.”
Starting in front of 100,000-plus fans is daunting, but the crowd will be overwhelmingly pro-Buckeye—good news for Sayin. While Ohio State lost plenty from last year’s national championship roster, they return and reload with plenty of talent. Getting Sayin into a rhythm could mean turning early and often to star wideout Jeremiah Smith, who must be more involved this time after being limited to one catch for three yards in last year’s Cotton Bowl win over Texas.
Sayin is mobile enough to handle pressure from a strong Texas front led by pass rusher Colin Simmons. Still, Ohio State’s offensive line may be the most important position group in this game, as keeping the sophomore quarterback clean will be critical.
Day doesn’t need Sayin to do anything flashy in his first start. Playing within himself and leading the Buckeyes to a win remains the top priority.
