Kansas City Chiefs WR Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown got more action than anticipated initially during Week 1’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, but he’s not quite satisfied with the performance.

After Xavier Worthy left the game with a shoulder injury, Brown was thrust into the leading receiver role. Not only did he play the highest percentage of offensive snaps by a receiver, but he also led the team in targets (16), receptions (10), and yards (99).

“Hollywood (Brown) had a big day,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters on Wednesday. “It was good to get him back in the swing of things.”

Brown’s 16 targets against the Chargers were the most in a single game by a Chiefs receiver since 2021. The most impressive part about this is that he did it after missing most of training camp and the entire preseason with a foot and ankle injury.

“Yeah, I think you saw in the game, Hollywood (Brown) got more and more comfortable as things went on,” Mahomes said on Wednesday. “We asked him to do a lot of things. He had to run his routes and Xavier Worthy’s. He’ll be big these next couple of weeks as we try to get Xavier (Worthy) and Rashee (Rice) back and everything like that. But it’s something that he was ready for.”

As much as the Week 1 performance against the Chargers was about stepping into Xavier Worthy’s role, it was also about knocking some rust off for Hollywood Brown. He’d missed the majority of training camp and the preseason with injury, but he also hadn’t played in a Week 1 game since the 2023 NFL season.

“I mean, for me, it did feel like I ain’t played football in a long time that first game,” Brown said. “So, I wasn’t too pleased with my performance. But you know, I’ve come to work this week and I am ready to get after this week.”

Asked about what it means to be back, healthy, and to be a big part of this offense, Brown reemphasized that he’s unsatisfied with how he performed during Week 1.

“It means a lot to me,” Brown said. “Take pride in it. Take pride in the film that I put on the field. Like I said, I wasn’t too pleased with my performance, so I’m putting in a lot of work this week.”

Of course, individual glory isn’t what Brown is after. He’s in it to win football games and compete for championships.

“A win is important,” Brown said. “A win every week is important. You always want to go 1-and-0 in this league; it’s hard to get wins in this league, so it’s very important.”

As for the upcoming Super Bowl LIX rematch with the Eagles, Brown maintains that a win in that situation wouldn’t mean anything extra for him. It’s all about getting better one week at a time and building throughout the season.

“For some people, maybe,” Brown said. “I mean, for me, it’s Week 2 versus the Eagles, and that’s how I’m approaching it.”
