Lions make questionable roster move ahead of Bears matchup, although some good news can come from it
The Lions made a questionable practice squad elevation this week. Is it a big deal?
The Detroit Lions are looking to get right against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, and to help with that, they’ve made a Saturday roster move, even if it seems a little unsafe. Here is the one move they made and why it’s a tiny bit concerning.
Lions elevate Monty Rice from the practice squad
Rice just got here this week. Yes, Trevor Nowaske is out for this game, but I just don’t see why this is the move they make with all the players the Lions have on the practice squad right now. Rice will be fine, but this is a special teams move more than anything. Which, I get, practice squad elevations mostly are.
What I can’t understand is why you don’t use one of the elevations on new tackle Devon Cochran. Jamarco Jones is out for the season, Dan Skipper is hurt, and Taylor Decker didn’t practice all week. Now, sure, the good news from this is that with no tackle elevation, the Lions are more than likely planning to play Decker in this game. But it’s clear to everyone that he’s playing hurt, right?
The backup plan is Giovanni Manu, who seems like he might be ready to play some swing tackle, but we know Cochran has done that before for sure with the Bengals. It just feels like the Lions didn’t do a lot to give themselves some insurance in case something happens in this game. They’ve been losing tackles left and right this year.
It’s a super minor complaint and shouldn’t be taken as anything other than such; it’s just a bit of a surprise the Lions left themselves hanging, considering all that’s happened this summer with injured offensive linemen. That’s all. Not a big deal.

Brian Branch and Jameson Williams lost more than a game in the Lions loss to the Packers
The Detroit Lions’ loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday was not fun for anyone. The players had a bad day, the coaches had a bad day, and as we know from some of the wild overreactions, the fans had a bad day. But two guys had a worse day than anyone else. That […]
