Auburn Tigers HC Hugh Freeze has the best possible way to describe Oklahoma’s defense that Sooners fans will love

When you look at the Oklahoma Sooners and the similarities in the 2024 season and this year, there are only a few. One is that both defenses are insanely good. However, this one seems like it’s even better than that one, despite not having a takeaway yet this year.
The 2025 defense is so good that they’re actually making opposing head coaches sick before they even play them. Well, not actually, but Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze would certainly make you think that based on his most recent comments.
“First, I need some Pepto and some Tums, because your stomach starts turning,” Freeze said on the Dari Nowkhah Show. “Their first three games, they have dominated, and I mean dominated. They’ve allowed one touchdown, and it was on a bust [busted play]. They’re physical, fast, and they do a lot of things that present you with issues in both protection and the run game. Brent [Venables] does a Great job, and they’ve got great players. So, it’s a great challenge. I do think they’re one of the best defenses I’ve seen over the last few years.”
Sooners’ defense can take over vs. Tigers
This defense is elite, but somehow, they haven’t created a turnover yet, when the defense last year created 21 turnovers. That could change this weekend, as the Sooners could really take over the game on the defensive side alone, not to mention what the offense is likely to do. On defense, the pass rush is going to be key, as we all know – putting pressure on Jackson Arnold is going to force him to make bad decisions.
Freeze has every right to be freaking out about the Sooners’ defense, I mean, what they’re doing is pretty crazy. The Sooners have the No. 4 scoring defense in the country, the No. 1 pass defense efficiency, No. 4 third down defense, and the No. 26 explosive play defense, according to SEC Mike. The Sooners are in a position to really show that they are a team to be reckoned with in the SEC.
There is a small narrative around the college football world that the Sooners only have a good defense statistically because they haven’t played any elite offense. Now, maybe that is true. It’s not true, but hey, maybe it is. Even if the Sooners did shut down the Tigers on Saturday, that narrative would still be in place. However, you have to build a great resume when it comes time for playoff football. Right now, Auburn is No. 22 in the country. That would be two ranked wins in four games for the Sooners if they pull this off.
And if they do pull it off, which isn’t far-fetched, it will be primarily on the backs of the defense.
