Georgia HC Kirby Smart shares important injury updates and reveals why special freshmen continue to shine
The Georgia offensive line is almost healthy, but the team is sticking together regardless
The Georgia Bulldogs continue to find ways to create offensive success every single week, even if they might struggle initially. Yes it’s been imperfect so far, but Georgia is still 5-1, and despite playing with six different starting offensive line groups in six weeks, Kirby Smart has his team where they need to be.
When coach Smart met with the media this week he shared some more crucial injury updates on his offensive line that suggest for the first time Georgia might have some continuity up front. More than that, he was excited to share why his offensive line and team as a whole continues to shine in the face of adversity.
Facts on the 2025 Georgia Bulldogs offensive line
- Georgia has started six different combinations of starting offensive linemen in six games
- Monroe Freeling, Juan Gaston, and Earnest Greene continue to struggle with injury, but are fighting to get back to 100% according to Kirby Smart
- The Georgia Bulldogs continue to rely on heavy involvement from two freshman offensive linemen Juan Gaston and Dontrell Glover (180+ snaps for both on the season).
- Monroe Freeling just won SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week despite barely being able to practice halfway through the week last week.
Georgia Bulldogs offensive line is dinged up, but continue to impress
Monroe Freeling somehow won offensive lineman of the week against Auburn, despite pushing through significant injury. Juan Gaston and Earnest Greene have been fighting injuries of their own, leading to others stepping up and getting more snaps. Of course coach Smart had to address that trio and his offensive line group as a whole, but also talked about how his inexperienced leaders have been following up on the players who set the example before them:
“Yeah, all three of [Juan Gaston, Earnest Greene, and Monroe Freeling] have been practicing, doing a good job, and continue to work today. Trying to get as healthy as they can. In terms of the closeness of the team, I love this team. I’ve loved it. Enjoyed it. It’s a pleasure to go to work every day, to go out to practice. When the guys have a positive attitude about it–and they really have since the start of the year–it’s a lot of them’s first at bat, first go round. They have enthusiasm. The leaders have done a good job of setting the tone. There’s just a lot of first, second year players out there playing. Then a good bit of third year guys who have played, maybe not started, but this is their chance to lead. They’ve had good examples set before them that they follow in some big footsteps to help lead.”
Kirby Smart has been talking about the team’s depth issues for multiple seasons now to help get fans used to the idea of seeing younger players stepping up earlier. Gone are the days that Georgia can hog an entire roster’s worth of top tier blue chips just waiting in the wings as backups. Still, the Bulldogs keep winning.
They’ll be challenged this week by a very good Ole Miss team (one that beat them a year ago), but thanks to some of their young players like freshmen offensive linemen Juan Gaston and Dontrell Glover, the Bulldogs might just handle business this week:
“Well, [Juan Gaston and Dontrell Glover] have pulled it off because they were both very intelligent, well coached high school football players. They were more advanced in terms of their ability to process information, pick things up, understand protections, and run game. That’s why they’ve been able to do it. They’ve also been forced into it. You know, I don’t know if they were freshmen last year, if they would have played this year. I don’t know if they were freshmen anytime in our program that they would have had to play last year. It’s just there’s more opportunity for freshmen to play now because there’s more more spots and there’s less depth, so it’s going to probably become more the norm than unusual. But yes, it is very unusual for us.”
It’s truly strange to see so much inexperience starting for Georgia, but as long as the Bulldogs keep surviving, one week at a time, these critical games where all these freshmen and sophomores are gaining critical snaps could be just what Kirby’s team needs when it comes time to win a College Football Playoff game.
