The moves just keep coming for the LSU Tigers football program. Not even 24 hours after firing head coach Brian Kelly, the Tigers will have a new offensive play-caller now as well. Joe Sloan is out as the team’s offensive coordinator.

LSU fires OC Joe Sloan

According to reports, the Tigers have fired offensive coordinator Joe Sloan. Tight ends coach Alex Atkins will have play-calling duties for the final four games of the season for LSU’s offense.

LSU currently ranks No. 6 in the SEC in passing offense, No. 12 in scoring (25.5 PPG), No. 14 in total offense (355.5 yards) and No. 16 in rushing offense (106.3 yards).

The timing of this move is intriguing as it sets up a lot of moving pieces to the puzzle for the Tigers. With Kelly out as head coach and Frank Wilson set to be the interim HC, the staff for the remainder of the season is a bit fluid. Wilson has been LSU’s associate head coach and running backs coach.

More changes could be on the horizon. Although, keeping together most of the defensive staff seems more likely than not when you consider all of these moves around the coaching group elsewhere. No matter what – tough decisions are being made quickly after some big-time discussions around the future of the program.

“LSU will compete with the likes of Florida and Penn State for the best coaching candidates in the country. Lane Kiffin will surely get calls, and LSU feels like the best fit for him if he does depart Ole Miss. However, there’s still plenty of time for other jobs and more names to enter the fray.” — Ian Valentino

Sloan was the quarterbacks coach during Jayden Daniels’ Heisman Trophy campaign season and oversaw some of the weekly preparations for the offense. After jumping up to OC in 2024, he’s already been let go less than two full seasons into holding that position.

For LSU, their head coaching search will be one with plenty of “big fish” involved. If they don’t land an offensive guru/play caller as their HC, expect this coordinator hire to be a flashy one during the offseason.
