Kansas City Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt breaks silence on rookie LT Josh Simmons’ recent absence
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt finally commented on Josh Simmons’ absence with media members.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid put minds at ease regarding rookie LT Josh Simmons earlier this week, but the latest update on Simmons comes from the top of the organization.
Simmons has missed the past three weeks, somewhat mysteriously, as he deals with what has been described as a family matter. At the league meetings in New York City, Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt was asked about the situation with Simmons. According to ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler, Hunt told reporters, “I really can’t comment.”
Speaking to media members briefly ahead of “Monday Night Football” against the Washington Commanders, Hunt gave a more thorough answer on what’s going on with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Chiefs rookie LT Josh Simmons is expected back with the team sometime in the future
Hunt refrained from commenting on what Simmons is going through, but he did divulge a little on the communication that has been had and the expectations for his return in the future. FOX 4 Kansas City’s Harold R. Kuntz captured Hunt’s media interview.
“It’s not something I can go into,” Hunt began. “But it is a private family matter, and we’ve had good communication with him. There’s an understanding by both parties as to where he is, and we’re hopeful to have him back with the team sometime in the future.”
Asked about his confidence level in Simmons returning, Hunt didn’t hesitate in his answer.
“I do feel pretty good,” Hunt said.
ESPN’s Nate Taylor reported earlier this week that Simmons could rejoin the team during their Week 10 bye week. That seems like a logical point to get him back, but whether he actually returns then remains to be seen. Hunt’s “sometime in the future” doesn’t exactly instill confidence that they’ve got a date in mind for his return. But it’s also bad business to write a check you can’t cash.
The big question, if and when Simmons does get back: Will he still have a job as the team’s starting left tackle, or will Jaylon Moore surpass him on the depth chart? If Week 8 vs. the Commanders is any indication, Simmons’ return will be a welcome one.
