Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s latest update finally offers some answers on rookie LT Josh Simmons’ mysterious absence
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid offered his most succinct answer on Josh Simmons’ absence yet.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid finally offered up a little more information on the personal situation keeping rookie left tackle Josh Simmons sidelined.
Simmons was ruled out the past two weeks after he was a late addition to the injury report for personal reasons ahead of the Week 6 game against the Detroit Lions. A report then indicated that Simmons was back home dealing with a family matter, but there had been little clarity regarding the situation in the days since.
While Simmons isn’t back at practice for Kansas City, Reid’s update on Thursday reassured many in Chiefs Kingdom that their star rookie is precisely where he needs to be right now.
“And my update for you with Josh (Simmons) would just be, you know, there’s communication,” Reid told reporters. “I’m not going to get into all of it. Everything’s positive. It’s not a negative situation. So, he’s taking care of family.”
Reid was later asked about a timeline for Simmons’ return. He declined to comment on any specifics, but reiterated that Simmons has communicated the situation well.
“It’s been positive,” Reid said. “You know, he’s just been taking care of business. So, that’s the main thing right here. When you deal with this, that’s what you do. And he’s been very good about communicating it.”
Jaylon Moore is likely to start at left tackle again in Week 8 vs. the Commanders
With Simmons missing the first practice ahead of Week 8 and the past two weeks, it feels as if Jaylon Moore is destined to start again, even if the rookie soon returns to practice. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reiterated on Thursday that he is comfortable and confident with Moore protecting his blindside.
“Yeah, he’s a great job,” Mahomes told reporters. “I mean, he’s been ready. He comes to work every single day, a true pro. He comes to work with the mentality of being ready for that next snap. And so he’s done it all throughout training camp, and now he’s done it in the regular season, and that’s the reason that he’s here.”
Chiefs OT Jaylon Moore 2025 Stats
Moore has started two games at left tackle for Kansas City, allowing five pressures and one sack.
Moore performed so well in Week 7 against the Raiders that a former All-Pro left tackle thought he was Simmons. If Moore continues to earn playing time, the trust of the coaching staff, and the trust of his quarterback, the team might have a decision to make when Simmons is back in the fold. Do you go back to the talented rookie, or do you ride the hot hand with Moore?
