Bills lose out on key playmaker just hours ahead of the trade deadline
A swing and a miss by the Bills front office.
The Buffalo Bills did some salary cap maneuvering on Monday, restructuring the contract of nickel cornerback Taron Johnson to free up some much-needed space. It was indicative of a potential move ahead of the trade deadline. All 32 teams have until 4 p.m. ET on Nov. 4 to finalize trades.
One of the players that the Bills were kicking the tires on just went to the Jacksonville Jaguars, though. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that Buffalo had made calls about former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, ultimately losing out on landing the player. The Jags gave up fourth- and sixth-round picks to make the deal.
Meyers is a well-known name in Bills Mafia circles as the talented pass-catcher spent some time with the New England Patriots. The big-bodied receiver would’ve made an immediate impact on the roster; now, the team looks forward to a potential next move.
Brandon Beane, work your magic
Receiver is definitely the splashiest of positions for the Bills to make a trade. New Orleans Saints receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are two names that the fan base is clamoring for the team to acquire. Getting another weapon for quarterback Josh Allen would just be so much fun.
Unfortunately, injuries may have forced the team’s hand to move in a different direction. With defensive end Michael Hoecht being ruled out for the season, Buffalo could take a swing in that direction. What’s more, with injuries piling up at the defensive tackle position, that’s another group to monitor as the deadline rapidly approaches.
Bills Mafia can feel it; something’s brewing in Buffalo. The roster holes are obvious, the deadline is looming, and general manager Brandon Beane has never been one to sit still. If the Bills are going to make a move, now’s the time. All that’s left to do is wait for the next notification to drop.
