Florida Gators firing HC Billy Napier midseason could end up backfiring for a reason you wouldn’t expect
There are always unintended consequences with every decision.
The Florida Gators made the right move when fired head coach Billy Napier. He was 22-23 when they finally decided to let him go, and it felt like it was a year too late. The 4-0 finish to 2024 where quarterback DJ Lagway played lights out football. The reality was that a strong finish saved his job.
Going into the season, there were big expectations for a very good roster loaded with talent at premium positions. Ultimately, injuries and and Napier’s reluctance to give up play-calling cost him his job.
Firing Billy Napier early could cost them a top head coach candidate
Firing Napier after a homecoming win on October 19th ended the fanbase’s nightmare of living in purgatory. It also brought a real excitement that a new era was set to begin for the Gators. It’s also the fifth coaching search since Urban Meyer left the program after the 2010 season, and it’s something they are unfortunately used to.
This, however, is the first time they have fired a head coach before their rivalry game against the Georgia Bulldogs. Firing a head coach that early is important for one big reason: it gives you time to find a new regime and talk to your recruits about how bright the future is.
The Gators have been able to work on finding a new head coach for the last four weeks. Some of those conversations have been happening in back channels to see who would be interested in taking the coaching job. That in itself can give the Gators plenty of advantages.
Even with those advantages, which in all honesty are plentiful, it can be a negative to fire your head coach so early into the season. The biggest reason? It gives other teams a chance to give their head coaches an extension.
We’ve already seen multiple head coaches who could be targets for top jobs open, including the Penn State Nittany Lions and LSU Tigers, get an extension from their current schools. Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, and now Louisville’s Jeff Brohm is reportedly next on the list.
When a head coach gets fired the day after the regular season ends, there is a quick turnaround that makes getting an extension difficult. When you give these universities 6-8 weeks, it makes that much easier.
The Gators’ number one target is Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin, who they will be facing this upcoming weekend. He has yet to sign an extension or commit to staying at Ole Miss, and it could still be coming. If he says no, the Gators won’t have that many options left, especially with other high profile schools having similar openings.
To be fair to the Gators, the other teams firing their head coaches have made this much worse than it actually is, because there aren’t enough high profile candidates to fill these jobs.
The only thing that matters with head coach contracts is the buyout, and a new extension means a massive one, which won’t be paid by their new schools. It’s still the right decision to move on from Napier when they did, but there are always unintended consequences.
