Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman greets players during a Notre Dame football practice at Irish Athletic Center on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, in South Bend.

When you think about Notre Dame football, they have historically done a tremendous job both recruiting and developing outstanding tight ends. Names like Dave Casper, Mark Bavaro, Tyler Eifert, Kyle Rudolph, and Michael Mayer quickly come to mind, and they bring back many great memories.

It is a very easy pitch for prospective tight end recruits, and head coach Marcus Freeman and his Fighting Irish staff would be misguided not to use it.

The Irish have put together a tremendous 2026 tight end duo that includes Ian Premier and Preston Fryzel. Both players are ranked inside the top eight tight ends nationally, according to Rivals, and that includes Premer holding the top spot. There is also a lot of great buzz in the 2027 recruiting class already. The Irish have positioned themselves to close on several key targets at the position.

One of the top names to know early on is St. Charles (Mo.) Francis Howell Central star Jack Brown, who has already visited Notre Dame multiple times to this point. It is no secret that the Fighting Irish are in a very strong position early on, and many believed they might be the early leader. While there is no firm decision timeline set, Brown did drop an updated top six schools list this week. It should be no surprise that Notre Dame was listed among the finalists.

The Irish were joined by Michigan, Texas A&M, Missouri, Arizona State, and Illinois on that list.

If this recruitment ended today, what would Notre Dame’s chances be? Without a timeline, the staff will be tasked with being patient and continuing to recruit Brown hard. With such a deep and talented tight end board in place, Brown is just one of the really strong options on the table.

Jack Brown’s recruiting background

Brown is considered a four-star player by all major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, he is currently rated as the No. 107 overall player, the No. 6 tight end, and the No. 1 player in the state of Missouri for the 2027 recruiting class. The state of Missouri has brought the Irish the likes of Jeremiyah Love, Christian Gray, and Aneyas Williams in recent years.

Even outside of Brown’s finalists, a long list of impressive programs has been pursuing the 6-5, 215-pound pass catcher. Some of his other top offers include Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, USC, Oregon, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Miami, Penn State, and Auburn, among many, many others.
